UFC 225 Fight Predictions – Whittaker vs Romero
This evening, June 9th, 2018, the long-awaited and eagerly-anticipated rematch between the world’s best at 185 pounds will take place at the United Centre in Chicago, Illinois. I’ve decided to write a piece on the card and I’ll include my UFC 225 fight predictions for anyone thinking of throwing a few quid on the fights.
The current UFC champion at middleweight, Robert Whittaker will take on the former interim title challenger, and Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, Yoel Romero in the event headliner. Despite Romero hitting the scales at 185.2 pounds, meaning he missed championship weight and will be unable to fight for the belt, the fight is still on. The two originally met at UFC 213 in July 2017 when the New Zealand-born Whittaker won the vacant interim title via unanimous decision despite sustaining an injury during the fight. This fight will act as a title defense for Whittaker, but the Cuban will be unable to win the strap.
An interim UFC Welterweight Championship bout between former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington will be the co-main event. The winner is expected to fight the current champion at 170, Tyron Woodley. Woodley hasn’t fought since he beat Demian Maia in a one-sided decision at UFC 214 last Summer.
CM Punk vs Mike Jackson
The first fight on the main card of UFC 225 will be the match up with a combined professional MMA record of 0-2. Phil Brooks, most commonly known as CM Punk during his days spent in the WWE has received huge criticism for his desire to even train in mixed martial arts. His debut involved a quick submission finish from his opponent, Mickey Gall. Gall appeared to be levels above the pro wrestler when the pair faced off at UFC 203 in September of 2016.
Punk’s opponent, Mike Jackson had an extremely similar debut, which also involved getting brutally strangled by Mickey Gall. Gall has since gone on to boast a record of 4-1 in the UFC including a win over “Super” Sage Northcutt in December of 2016.
Punk has gotten a serious amount of abuse ever since he was originally signed by the UFC in the final months of 2014. It’s extremely difficult to gauge his stature as a professional mixed martial artist. The man has had one fight in which he was humiliated. For this reason, his upcoming opponent in Mike Jackson is probably the perfect matchup. Unfortunately, I feel like it will be a poor fight given the low experience of both fighters.
UFC 225 Fight Predictions: CM Punk Unanimous Decision
Andrei Arlovski vs Tai Tuivasa
Andrei Arlovski is one of those fighters who you know should retire, but you’ll still watch him every time he fights. Despite being 1-5 through 2016+2017, the Belarusian started 2018 with a win and has expressed no immediate interest in hanging up his gloved anytime soon.
On June, 9th he will take on the exciting young Australian heavyweight, Tai Tuivasa. Tuivasa has been making waves himself recently putting together back-to-back 1st round KO finished since joining the UFC. Tuivasa is 14 years younger than Arlovski but will be eager to make a big statement when he takes on the veteran in Chicago this Saturday night.
Heavyweight fights are always difficult to call. When all it takes is one punch to land, either one of these fighters could get their hand raised. I can’t help but side with the young ozzy fighter purely on his confidence alone. Arlovski’s chin has taken some serious damage over the years, especially in recent fights. I don’t see him getting out of this one in one piece:

Holly Holm vs Megan Anderson
This fight will take place at 145 pounds and is going largely under the radar. Yet, I find it to be one of the most interesting matchups on the card.
Holly Holm has had an extremely mixed series of results after shocking the world when she kicked Ronda Rousey in the head several years ago. Despite losing 3 fights on the bounce after winning the Bantamweight UFC title in 2015, Holm hasn’t looked out of place when fighting the best women in the world. Most recently, Holm fought who most believe is the greatest female fighter of all time in Cris Cyborg. Despite losing a unanimous decision, it was a relatively close fight.
Her opponent, the Australian ex-Invicta FC Featherweight Champion Megan Anderson is someone who’s UFC debut has been eagerly anticipated ever since she began calling out Cris Cyborg. A lot of MMA fans won’t be very familiar with Anderson’s skills or fighting style and that lends to the unpredictable nature of this matchup.
Anderson is currently on a 4-fight win-streak. She has defeated all of her opponents by TKO and is likely riding a wave of confidence going into her fight with Holly Holm this weekend. I personally believe this is a large step-up in competition for the 28-year old Australian. I just don’t see how she wins this one if I am being honest. Holm is extremely technical. She doesn’t rush her combinations and is excellent at controlling the range. I see Holm getting her hand raised in a routine decision.
UFC 225 Fight Predictions: Holly Holm Unanimous Decision
Rafael Dos Anjos vs Colby Covington
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t itching to see this fight. On a personal note, I don’t like either of these fighters. I believe they are both pretending to be people they aren’t. When you hear Dos Anjos address anyone, it always seems so forced. Perhaps this is down to English being his second language. But it’s always cringeworthy hearing him try to trash-talk his opponents. Fantastic fighter, but an idiot on the mic.
Colby Covington is a fighter who I genuinely used to support. His oppressive wrestling-style is exhausting even to watch and he is a tough matchup for anyone in the welterweight division. That said, he has turned himself into an absolute weirdo lately, just being a horrible person for no reason. Perhaps he is trying to emulate Conor McGregor’s success adopting such an outspoken persona, but it isn’t working at all.
Both fighters have looked seriously impressive lately. RDA has looked impeccable since moving up from 155 pounds, defeating Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny and ex-champ Robbie Lawler. Covington has strung together a 5-fight win streak. With the last of which coming against veteran Demian Maia in October of last year. I think Covington’s wrestling could win him a couple of rounds. ut I believe RDA is far superior on the feet. I’m going to go with RDA purely because I hate him the least.

Robert Whittaker vs Yoel Romero
For those of you reading this who haven’t seen the first fight between these two, go watch it now.
I keep going back and forth between Whittaker and Romero and I honestly cannot decide between the two. They would have figured a lot out about each other in their initial clash. They fought for the Interim-Middleweight UFC Championship last Summer, but that means nothing now.
One year on, primed to face each other for the second time, I imagine we will see two completely different fighters enter the cage this Saturday. Romero is fresh off of a horrific knockout of Luke Rockhold in February earlier this year. You can’t help but feel like this is his last chance at UFC gold. The Cuban turned 41 years old in April of this year and even though he is in ridiculous shape for his age, the man can’t keep going forever.
Whittaker has been inactive for the last 12 months. He has been injured for most of the time that has elapsed since his last fight. He comes into this one healthy and ready to prove that he deserves to remain as the #1 guy at 185 pounds.
I think Romero will come out strong and land a few takedowns in the early rounds. He will use his springy style to jump in and out of range. I think he will give Whittaker problems early on. But he is 41. I think his gas tank will begin to give up on him and Whittaker will take the championship rounds to hold onto his belt.
